Annual report 2017

In 2017, Mission East responded rapidly to emergency situations, particularly in Iraq and Nepal. Meanwhile, our development work continues to change the lives of thousands of people living in poverty and marginalisation. We also achieved a major stamp of approval for the quality of our work - we were certified as compliant with the Core Humanitarian Standard.

Today, we still work in the former Eastern Bloc, but the conflicts in and around the Middle East are playing an ever larger role in our work. Towards Inclusion - A guide for organisations & practitioners

Based on 10 years of experience of working with the most marginalized and excluded communities in Nepal, Mission East, together with Light for the World, and ICCO Cooperation joined hands to create the practical guide, 'Towards Inclusion'. This publication sets out the rationale for inclusion and provides technical advice and tools for putting theory into practice.

In 2016, Mission East celebrated our 25-year jubilee of bringing assistance to the most vulnerable. Meanwhile, the severe humanitarian situation in Iraq was never far from the headlines, and Mission East’s work in the country increased significantly.

The year 2015 was largely affected by the continued humanitarian crisis in Syria and Iraq as well as the most severe earthquake in Nepal in more than 80 years. In addition to responding to these emergencies, Mission East continues to strengthen rural communities and ensure inclusion for all.

Since 2001 Mission East has been working in Afghanistan to help secure the short- and long-term recovery and development of vulnerable rural communities by meeting basic needs and building up local capacities.

“This is the first time in my life I am producing vegetables, which I never thought I could grow in the long and harsh Afghan winter. Now I plan to construct more greenhouses,” says 54 year-old farmer, Mohammad Sharif. He is one of the participants in a Mission East project in North-Eastern Afghanistan focusing on livelihood.
